get busy doing nothing kurt johnston
It's hard for me to remember a busier time in my personal and ministry
life than the time I'm in right now. Today's my 14th wedding
anniversary, but I had to come into the office early to get ready
for a special staff meeting. Yesterday, I spent 2 hours in a meeting
that only served to create a dozen new deadlines for me and my team.
I'll need to work late tonight because I took some time off last week
to be a chaperone for my son's 2nd grade class trip (for some highlights,
check out my current post in SJH message board). Unfortunately, by
chaperoning his trip, I was forced to miss out on my daughter's school
play. Most of our junior high small groups have wrapped up for the
school year, but I've somehow managed to allow mine to stretch out
for a few extra weeks (that must be because my 7th grade guys are
begging me to extend our exegetical study of Habakkuk!)
I could go
on and on, and I have a hunch you could as well! My Pastor, Rick Warren,
likes to say he who burns the candle
at both ends isn't as bright as he thinks he is. Right
now, it feels like my candle is burning on both ends and in
the middle! When I mentioned to the Simply Youth Ministry
team that I was going to write this month about 'doing nothing',
they laughed out loud at me. I realize I'm not the poster-child
for balanced living but I'm re-committing to giving it my
best effort. Maybe you should, too.
All of us are busy, and
most of us are busy doing really good things. As we head into
summer, I would suggest that it's a good time for all of us to
evaluate how we spend our time, what we allow as priorities and
the pace we've set for our lives. When's the last time you slept
in on a Saturday? When's the last time you and your spouse watched
an old movie on T.V.? Have you gone for a bike-ride with your
kids lately? Can you remember the last time you actually wasted
a day?
I think it's time for me to get busy; and it may be for
you as well. Time for us to get busy doing nothing!
