adapting family-based ministry for students
jim burns

A key component that you will need to think about is adding one more "purpose" in your family-based youth ministry... reaching parents.

What you have is an incredible opportunity to reach non-believing parents of students in your ministry. As a youth pastor, 50% of the students we had in our ministry came from non-church homes. It was an incredible opportunity... the same one you have.

Here are a few ideas...

1. Put together a Parent Advisory Board to help in the application of all your parent ministry, but especially in the area of reaching parents.

2. Think through doing a "parents forum" dealing with topics that would interest a non-believer. They are parents too, and love their children and want what is best for them. Do a series on sex and sexuality, drugs and alcohol use, etc... and be sure to promote it in the community, not just in your church.

3. Reach out to non-believing parents, just as you would non-believing students. Have parents in your ministry join you as you reach out to other parents who are in need of Jesus.

The best thing to do is to formulate your own particular strategy and go from there. The process of helping parents leave a lasting spiritual legacy begins by making sure they have a spiritual legacy to pass on.
