better communication to parents
doug fields

i need some ideas on how i can be a better communicator to parents. i am criticized for not keeping them informed enough. any ideas?

It's important to communicate to parents. Uninformed parents are often frustrated parents. Even the apostle Paul informed the churches of his itinerary when he would write letters so they could be prepared for him or his helpers as they passed through town. (see Romans 15:23-16:1 Corinthians 16:1-9; Colossians 4:7-9). Here's a few ideas:

1. Publish a quarterly calendar so families know what's happening.

2. E-mail a monthly parent's newsletter of the top 5-10 things parents should know.

3. Make parenting resources available when you come across something that might be helpful to parents. It doesn't inform them of anything specific to your ministry, but it keeps you in front of them with an "I care" message.

4. Host parent information meetings (for new parents). Use this time to restate your vision for youth ministry and your desire for a family-friendly relationship.

5. Inform parents of other parents who are going through similar struggles (make sure you get their permission prior to giving their name out).

6. When you are away on a trip, set up a voice-mail address where parents can call and hear daily updates on the trip.

These ideas won't change the world, but they'll get you moving in the right direction.
